Licensed Home Inspector

FEMA Inspector and a Level Two Code Inspector
Inspected over 2,500 Homes
We are located on Oak Island North Carolina and after many years of building houses, in 1998 I decided to inspect homes and build fewer houses. It was a little slow to start with and then things began to happen. All of sudden I was doing 250 Homes a year myself and then my wife Sylvia retired and after a few weeks off I asked her about helping me.
Now when we go to inspect a home we have our checklist - she starts in the kitchen and baths and with her years of being around me in the construction field, she has acquired a good working knowledge of all the new appliances and what to expect. To be honest, she understands so many of the new appliances much better than I do and when she approves it you can be sure it works!
As a team when we have something wrong we talk it over, between the two of us, and we reach a decision to correct or report the problem. While Sylvia is working the inside I am on the outside working and when I do the report she always proof reads it before I send it out in Home Gauge.
Home Gauge and American Home Warranty together have helped increase our business a lot. When the customer gets his report they are shocked at how well the report is written and structured, plus they get a 90 Day Limited Home Warranty from American Home Warranty free of charge. A year ago we had a termite inspection company join us for our termite inspections, and if a client gets a termite inspection from us the company will go back and treat the house for pests inside free of charge within 90 days of the first inspection. All this together makes a good one-stop package of professional services.
Before Sylvia started helping with inspections we would often go out to eat and sometimes customers would stop by to chat while I was trying to remember their names. When they would leave she would ask who they were. I remember their houses but often not their names. Now she is just like me: when you meet 2 new families a day it is very hard to remember all of them!
We both love our job and enjoy meeting all the customers. I can’t imagine how it would be to do something for a living that you don’t like and do it just for the money.
We live on a 14 mile island on the coast of North Carolina. Our home is located on the golf course and 3 blocks from the ocean.
On our days off, I play golf May to October and Sylvia volunteers for the Sea Turtle Protection Program on the island. All in all, a very good life!
